Life expectancy of a lamp is determined by how long the lamp lasts without any major color rendering degradation or burnout. Many variables can affect lamp life including the manufacturing process: the pressure of gas inside the tube and the quality of components used; along with the characterisitcs of the display case: mainly the type of ballast.
As an example, two lamps with the same color spectrum or temperature but engineered by two completely different manufacturers will have a very different life expectancy. and the integrity of their continued illumination and color rendering properties will also differ over time.
